Avi and I met on Jdate (jewish dating site)… his profile picture was him hanging from a tree like a monkey. I knew he was silly and I wanted to learn more. It was raining on the day we met. I remember pulling up to the restaurant in a cab. Avi was waiting outside with an umbrella and opened the cab door for me. Over dinner, he told me that he was not going on any more first dates…. little did he know he had sealed his fate!
It turned out that we had gone to the same summer camp and although Avi is 3 years older than me, we overlapped at camp for 7 summers! From looking at his old camp pictures, I actually remember him being the camp clown! He was this little guy that everyone loved and I have specific memories of this from 15+ years ago.
On a weekend trip to the Finger Lakes in upstate NY, we hired a driver to take us to some local wineries. Our first stop was at the Bellhurst Castle winery, the driver told us that she wanted to show us around the grounds. She led us outside where a table was set up overlooking the lake. Avi brought me to this table where a bottle of champagne was labeled , “Dena, will you marry me?”! I was elated and of course said “yes!”
Today, he is my silly man and I love every bit of him. Our July 3, 2011 wedding was incredible. Family members flew in from as far as Israel and friends, many from summer camp, helped share in the most special day of our lives.
