We made a difference!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

One can often run into Mike at the Kennett Square, PA Starbucks getting his morning coffee occasionally. You may remember his big “Out West” photography show from last summer. That is where Mike met Cynthia and Nelson who also like to relax with a cup of coffee.
When Cynthia threw a surprise 90th birthday party for her mom at the Delaware Nature Museum she wanted to make sure to document this gathering of family members from near and far. We were thrilled to be part of the celebration. One only meets truly inspirational people a few times in life. Nancy duPont Cooch is an amazing woman who made a difference in the lives of her family members but also the local community. We can’t express enough how lucky we feel to have been there to document it!

This is what Cynthia had to say about an album that we created as a present for her mom. It made me cry!

jana

Jana, You can never imagine how thrilled both my Mom and Ned were today. They just poured over the book…we caught them on a good day… Ned feeling pretty well and my Mom just glad to see anyone but a doctor or nurse.
Thank you again, you truly have given them a special happy moment which they will have to share together until the book is “dog eared” . We are so glad that we had the book presentation on a “good day” so that they will forever think of it in a positive way. I just know that it was fate that we ran into another Starbucks junkie in Mike..we are so glad that we took a leap of faith and had you there on a special family evening. The book is perfection! Thanks again, Cynthia

Here are a few spreads from the album:

We were thrilled to receive a phone call from one of our 2003 couples about a family session. Jean and Linda’s was one of the first weddings that I photographed with Mike. Where has the time gone? Little C was so great and cooperative. He was a pleasure to photograph.
We love our new Drop it Modern backgrounds! Can’t wait to use the the others in the next few weeks.

Andrea and Robert        Hotel DuPont-Wilmington, DE

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

It was Andrea Jacono and Robert Williamson’s big day on March 12, 2010! They tied the knot at St. Thomas the Apostle, located in Glen Mills, PA. It was a very stormy day, gusting winds and heavy rain but that did not stop Andrea and Rob from having the best day of their lives! We shot Mary Kay’s(Andrea’s sister) wedding last year, thanks Kathleen and Joe for having us back, we really enjoyed being a part of your wedding day once again. The reception held at the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington DE was beautiful, lots of partying to the sounds of JellyRoll . At one point the four grandfathers sang with the band! Performed two songs, the guests went crazy, they loved it! They had the moves too! We want to thank Dave Williams from Cinema Cake (formally Dvideography) for his creative filming and Jennifer Houser from the Hotel DuPont for making the night run so smoothly! Please enjoy more pictures from Andrea and Robert’s wedding HERE !
Enjoy!

Tara & Family

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Winter is officially over, but I could not resist sharing this fun, snowy photo session. Some of you may remember Tara, our dedicated intern from the studio and from weddings. She is now living in Michigan with her husband Ryan and working as a photographer. I was thrilled when she asked me to photograph her family for gifts. We had so much fun at Gibraltar Gardens in Wilmington despite the freezing weather.

Just ask mike & Jeff” Photography Workshop #2

A NATURAL LIGHT DAY- EMBRACING THE LIGHT AND MAKING THE BEST OF IT!

Well I have to say the weather was amazing this past Saturday and everyone who attended the Saturday shooting workshop had a great experience. So much was learned and the students practiced photographing models in real shooting situations.
It was also so important for everyone to have fun! And they did! This was the second shooting workshop in the ” Just ask mike & jeff ” Spring Photography Seminar Series. The first, held two weeks ago was all about studio lighting. Saturday In the field- mike, Jeff and jana demonstrated how to work with less then perfect mid-day light. We also worked one on one with everyone answering questions and helping the students with composition and exposure. After about 3 hours shooting, we returned to the studio to process and critique images. Jana my Associate Photographer and Production Manager guided the class through Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Everyone was very surprised to see how well they did! Thank you Jana for your invaluable post production expertise! And a special thanks to Heather and Genna for modeling for all of us. And to all the students who attended we LOVED having you! Please enjoy the following pics from the shoot!
If you are interested in attending future photography classes and workshops held by mike and jeff please contact me.
Don’t delay, classes fill up quickly! info@mkphoto.com

WPPI 16×20 Print Competition

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Your testimonials remind us how much our hard work is appreciated, but entering prints in an international competition somehow makes it all official. We start looking through the past year’s favorite images after the holiday rush and spend a few days deciding, tweaking and printing on the studio Stylus Pro 4800 Epson printer. Then the boxes go out, and after anxious waiting we witness print judging.
Many amazing prints were selected out of over thirty five hundred entries for everyone to view. We are proud to announce that six of the prints were captured by Mike and Jana! We couldn’t do it without our amazing couples and supportive vendors. Thank You!

mkPhoto at WPPI International Photography Convention

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

The annual trip to the WPPI international photography convention in Las Vegas is always full of inspiration, learning and excitement. We spent time studying with some of the world’s leading wedding and portraits photographers – Kevin Kubota, Jim Garner, Catherine Hall, Dave and Quinn Chen, David Beckstead and many others. The trade show was as exciting as ever – a few new toys for the studio will make an appearance soon.

It was not all just hard work. We had some fun too, lots of great cafes and restaurants. We definitely had two favorites though Mon Ami Gabi in Paris and Shibuya in MGM. The stay at the Signature Suites at MGM was quite a treat. Make sure to check it out if you ever make a trip to Las Vegas. This is the view from our balconies.

We looked for inspiration outside the convention as well. KA one of the Cirque de Soleil performances was an amazing experience – visually stunning!
When the city got to be too much, we headed east to Zion National Park and spent four hours on a three-mile hike climbing rocks and jumping over creeks taking photographs. Make sure to visit Oscar’s Café in Springdale, UT for a Murder Burger and a cold beer after a long day of hiking.
